The AIPL Mixed Doubles tournament was held at Shootpool this past Sunday and there were 15 entrants, the same number as last year.

The 1st Round saw some shocks, one being defending champions Larry Baker & Penny Mines going out at the first hurdle, losing 3-2 to Max Burgess & Millie who played superbly to beat last year's winners.

There was also a grudge match of sorts in the opening round as finalists for last two years, David Feore & Wenda Hooton, who won in 2014 - 2015 before finishing as runners-up last season, were drawn to face one another after finding new partners for this year.

And it was Feore who prevailed as he and new playing partner Sonia Hooton defeated Wenda & her new doubles partner Adam Jackow 3-0.

Wayne Thorne & Kylie MacLean and Simon Honeyball & Nicola Court both were also 3-0 winners in the round, whilst 2014 - 2015 runners-up Chris Eley and Sue Latham squeezed past Nigel Playford and Tracy Playford 3-2.

Steve Chaloner & Zenya Heap dominated the table as they beat Peter Ward & Amber Carter, with Stephen Page & Victoria Page the final pairing to win in the 1st Round.

All the winners joined Brendon Ensoll & Louise Ashby-Hatcher, who were given the bye, in the draw for the next round.

The Quarter-Final stage saw Max Burgess & Millie continue their form from the opening round defeat of the defending champions as they saw off Brendon & Louise in a whitewash, as did Steve & Zenya over Simon & Nicola, while David & Sonia brushed aside the challenge of Stephen & Victoria.

The last match of the round was a fiercely fought encounter, as the match between Wayne & Kylie and Chris and Sue went the distance with Wayne sealing the win in the all important final frame.

The semi-finals saw both finish 4-2 with Wayne & Kylie defeating David & Sonia whilst the other match saw Steve & Zenya fight back from 2-0 down to beat Max Burgess & Millie .

From 15 entrants, it was down to 2, as the final pitched Wayne & Kylie versus Steve & Zenya.

Wayne & Kylie started the stronger, taking the opening pair of frames before Steve & Zenya hit back to level with a brace of their own.

An unfortunate potting of the black out of turn from Steve saw them fall behind again but a superb clearance from partner Zenya in the next brought them level for the second time.

The seventh frame saw Wayne & Kylie successful as they again moved in front but once more, Steve & Zenya were not to be beaten, as they leveled the match for a third time.

That left the match down to the final frame, winner takes all, and it was Kylie who potted her final four reds and the black to seal the victory and 2016 - 2017 AIPL Mixed Doubles title for her & Wayne.

Congratulations to Wayne & Kylie for winning the tournament, and thank you to all the players who participated in the tournament.

Thanks also to Sue & Al at Shootpool for hosting.
