Gibson back in Veuve Clicquot Top 2

17 January 2018 20:45:00 Posted By Felix

Tommy Gibson moved back into the Top 2 in Veuve Clicquot with a 6-3 defeat of Matt Stone who drops down into third place as a result of the defeat.

Trailing 3-1, Matt fought back to level the scores, but couldn't prevent Tommy from winning the final three frames to take the match.

It was Matt's second consecutive loss after a five match winning streak was ended just before Christmas, and he wasn't the only Top 2 player from last week to endure his second successive loss.

Richard Ilsley remains atop the division but his lead is reduced to just three points after his second loss in as many matches, after starting the season with seven straight victories.

Richard's match with Jason Hoff ebbed and flowed with the two players both holding leads before ultimately going down to the final black with Jason sealing a 5-4 win.

Jason followed that with a comfortable 7-2 victory over Joe Mcloughlin in a rearranged match this past Monday with the results seeing Jason stay in sixth place.

Joe had earlier played Chris Johnston in his scheduled match, with Chris fighting back from 1-0 and 4-3 down to take the match 5-4.

The win keeps Chris in the promotion mix just six points from second back in fourth whilst the result drops Joe down the table where he now sits just two points outside the relegation spots with four matches left.

A double win for Andy Revie saw him catapult six places up the table into eighth place, and five points outside the relegation zone, as he first beat Jack Mason 6-3 before defeating Misfits teammate Arron Flanagan 5-4 in a decisive ninth frame.

Despite the setback of defeat in that match, Jack himself moved up four places into fifth with two wins on the week in additional matches.

Jack won the final three frames to beat Oliver Burgess 6-3 before going one better and thrashing Brian Lopez 7-2.

Brian had earlier in the week beaten Chris Mottau 6-3.

That was Chris' second defeat of the week after succumbing 6-3 to Max Burgess who had earlier himself fallen 5-4 to Steve Curran in a match that went down to the final frame black ball.

Looking ahead to next week's fixtures, leader Richard Ilsley and third placed Matt Stone will be looking to bounce back from successive defeats as they face Max Burgess and Steve Curran respectively, whilst second placed Tommy Gibson will be hoping to extend his four match winning streak, current best in the division, when he goes up against fifth placed Jack Mason. Fourth will play sixth as Chris Johnston and Jason Hoff face each other. And the remaining three matches could have big implications in the relegation battle as six of the bottom seven players feature in those three matches. Andy Revie (eighth) and Chris Mottau (tenth) are the highest placed players of those involved and they clash separated by just a single point. Brian Lopez and Joe Mcloughlin face one another sitting level in eleventh place with identical season records. And the last match sees the bottom two, Oliver Burgess and Arron Flanagan, play each other level on 39 points split only by virtue of Oliver having won one more match.

Next week's fixtures in full, to be played on 22nd January at 8:00pm
