Feore wins first Shoot Blackball title

After finishing as runner-up for the first three seasons of Grey Goose in the Shootpool Blackball Singles League, David Feore has won Season 4 by 2 points from Shelley McDermott.

Two weeks ago Feore beat Ben Marshall 9-0, his second whitewash victory of the season, to move 10 points clear at the top of the table but having played more games than his title rivals and with one final match left against Shelley.

That match was part of a tricky run-in for Shelley whose final three matches were against the three time Grey Goose runner-up Feore, last season's champion Darryl Clarke and title contender Callum Boyd who was making his debut in the league this season.

Callum had additional matches in hand, four in fact, but was 28 points back from Feore at the top of the table.

He made inroads into that deficit with victories against Peter Ward (6-3) and Adam Jackow (7-2), before scheduling two matches against Max Burgess and Shelley on the same day.

Dropping the opening frame against Max, Callum answered with three consecutive frames to take control of the match.

Max won two of the next three to keep himself in the match at 4-3 down but a brace for Callum in the last two frames saw him home 6-3.

The results left Callum 6 points ahead of Shelley prior to their match, but with Shelley now holding a match in hand.

As you would expect of a match with two title contenders looking to deliver a knockout blow to the other's hopes, the pool was of a high standard, but for the opening three frames it looked to be a curse for whoever broke as all three went against break leaving Shelley 2-1 up.

That immediately became 3-1 with a superb break & dish for Shelley.

Down by two, and potentially on the ropes in the title race if he slipped further behind in the match, Callum responded with a stunning break & dish of his own in the very next frame before quickly adding the sixth to level the match.

The next two frames were shared to see the match go the distance and whilst both players had chances, it was Shelley who won that all important final frame to clinch the match 5-4.

That left Shelley with matches against last year's Top 2 to play, and Darryl showed he wasn't about to relinquish his crown without a fight as he beat Mike Collins 7-2.

The table stood with Feore leading on 69 points, Darryl second on 66 points, Callum third with 64 and Shelley trailing on 58 points with 2 matches left whilst the other three all had one last match.

Shelley and Feore played first, and it was Feore who started the stronger by taking two of the first three for a 2-1 lead.

However, that was Feore's last lead of the match as Shelley rattled off four unanswered frames to clinch victory and importantly narrow the gap to his opponent in the table.

Both players shared the final two frames at one each as the match finished 6-3, leaving Feore to finish the season on 72 points, with Darryl and Shelley left to play each other trailing by 6 and 8 points respectively.

The match begun very sided, as Shelley took the opening four frames for a 4-0 lead that ended Darryl's chances of successfully defending his title.

Darryl won the fifth frame to stop the run and left Shelley needing to run out the remainder of the match to lift the title, but those title hopes were extinguished in the very next frame as Darryl won his second consecutive frame that meant Feore would be crowned the Season 4 champion.

That left Shelley and Darryl's to play out the match for second place, and when the two players shared the next two frames to leave Shelley leading 5-3, it meant that new battle for second would come down to the very last frame of the match and the season.

Whoever won would seal the runner-up spot in the league by a single point, and it was Shelley who won that final frame to take the match 6-3 and clinch the runner-up prize.

Congratulations to David Feore for his first Shootpool Blackball Singles League title and congratulations to Shelley McDermott for finishing as runner-up in his debut season.
