Smirnoff underway after first week fizzled out

03 October 2017 20:30:00 Posted By Felix

The second week of Smirnoff saw six matches played after the opening day had just one match take place due to a raft of postponements.

Mike Collins won that single opening day match, never trailing once as he beat Mark Tumilty 5-4, although he was never able to secure the match until the final frame.

Mark, however, showed good bouncebackability to win two matches this week and is the early season table topper.

First, Mark twice won four running frames to defeat Sue Latham 8-1 before emerging victorious 5-4 in a nine frame thriller with Ryan May.

Twice Mark won a brace to establish a two frame lead only for Ryan to twice take a brace himself and level the match at 4-4 to take it into the ninth frame with all still to play for.

Ryan sits second, three points behind his opponent, after playing two more matches this weekend, with one win and one loss against two league newcomers.

Playing Mark Frost, Ryan won the opening three frames to give himself a platform that his opponent was never able to recover from, as although Mark brought it back to 3-2, Ryan kicked on with another brace to clinch the match.

The final two frames were swapped as the match finished 6-3.

Ryan started strongly in his other match, winning the first two frames to take an early 2-0 lead that was soon wiped out by a brace from Laura Hunter.

A second brace of the match for Ryan put him on the hill at 4-2, but Laura was not to be denied in her Shootpool Blackball Singles League debut match as she won the final three frames to complete the 5-4 comeback.

Amber Carter went one better with her fightback as she won the final four frames to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 victory over the third league newcomer Trevor Gunn.

And the last match of the afternoon saw Elliot Riley recover from letting a 3-1 lead slip to 4-3 behind as he won the final two frames to beat Mike Collins 5-4.

Season 3 champion Max Burgess had previously recovered from 2-0 down against Dan Dalton to win 5-4 as they brought their match forward one week due to holiday commitments.

Looking ahead to next week's fixtures, leader Mark Tumilty and second placed Ryan May both don't play, giving the chasing pack the chance to close the gap at the top. Mike Collins in third faces Trevor Gunn. Amber Carter sits in joint fourth after her superb fightback victory and will face Dan Dalton this week with Dan having comfortably won their two prior Smirnoff meetings. Sue Latham and Elliot Riley will clash with the pair sharing their Smirnoff previous encounters one apiece. And the last match of the afternoon sees two league newcomers face another as Mark Frost plays Laura Hunter.

Next week's fixtures in full, to be played on 15th October at 4:00pm
